The Pick: Skiifall and Jorja Smith Got Us Feeling Everything On “Her World”

It’s hard to talk about Skiifall without leaning into tired descriptors of diasporic fusion or cultural hybridity. The story often writes itself: the Saint Vincent-born, Montreal-raised artist combines his Caribbean roots with the cold urgency of North American drill. It’s a tidy narrative, but one that risks oversimplifying what makes his music so compelling. The similarities to artists like Popcaan and J Hus are obvious, but dig deeper, and you’ll see a kinship with left-field innovators like Sampha or even Frank Ocean, artists who explore the nuances of vulnerability and masculinity with a feather-light touch.

His latest track, “Her World,” is a brooding collaboration with Jorja Smith. The two artists have a history that predates this record — Smith’s been an admirer of Skiifall since “Ting Tun Up” — and her contribution to it, aided by her spectral, haunting vocals, does much to elevate the beauty of the track. Produced by K
enny Beats’, the production avoids the usual clichés that come with genre crossovers — no overwrought samples or gaudy effects. Instead, it’s stripped down to the essentials: a bare-bones rhythm, soft melodies, and a bassline that hums beneath it all with state artists’ deliveries sitting right in the pocket.
