Burna Boy Expresses Regret Over Controversial Afrobeats Comments

Grammy-winning Nigerian megastar Burna Boy has issued an apology for his 2023 statement that the Afrobeats genre is “mostly about nothing” and lacks lyrical substance. The artist, who has long dubbed his own music “Afro-fusion,” expressed remorse during a recent interview, citing a past lack of understanding and personal struggles.

The initial comments, made in an interview with Apple Music in August 2023, sparked heated debate within the music industry and among fans. Burna Boy had asserted that a large portion of Afrobeats music was devoid of real-life experiences and focused solely on “a great time.” This led to widespread criticism, with many pointing to the genre’s diverse storytellers and its role in globalizing African music.

In a recent conversation with BBC’s Eddie Kadi on July 15, 2025, Burna Boy retracted his earlier stance. He explained that at the time, he failed to grasp the significance of “Afrobeats” as a unifying banner for African artists on the global stage. “I didn’t realise we needed Afrobeats tag as an umbrella to go to anywhere,” he stated, acknowledging his previous perspective was misguided.

The “Last Last” crooner also revealed that he was in a “dark place mentally” when he made the controversial remarks. He emphasized the need for unity among African artists to continue pushing the continent’s music forward. This apology is quite a shift from his previous staunch defense of his “Afro-fusion” label and his critiques of the broader Afrobeats movement. The gesture has been met with varied reactions, with many appreciating his willingness to reflect and publicly apologize, while others remain critical of the initial dismissal of a genre that has been instrumental to his own international success.
