The Pick: TAR1Q Finds His Groove on “Step”

Since the release of his debut EP, Son of the Moon, TAR1Q has marked himself as an artist with long-haul potential — a vocalist with a clear direction and a voice that instantly hooks. The project signaled the arrival of a young artist ready to go the distance. Since then, the road has been long and winding, but TAR1Q worked to keep his momentum afloat through sporadic releases with flashes of brilliance sprinkled across singles and features. And with his latest project, Okada Airlines, he has discovered a sweet spot. Tucked within the EP’s standout offerings, “Step” is a clear gem — a kinetic record that encapsulates the vibe-driven ease that TAR1Q increasingly seems to master.

From the first beat, “Step” plants its flag firmly in uptempo territory. TAR1Q approaches the beat with a cool-headed calm of someone who knows exactly where he’s headed and has no need to rush. His vocals flow smoothly, carried by the current of the bumping groove. The production team of Bola BMH and Fez demonstrate a sharp ear for detail as the beats engage skittering percussion, buoyant basslines, and polished rhythms that nod to Afrobeats’ flirtation with house and dance elements. TAR1Q employs a catchy refrain that echoes through the track, delivering an invitation to let go of inhibitions and embrace the dancefloor. While it’s been a journey since Son of the Moon, tracks like “Step” suggest that the artist is hitting his stride — and it’s a groove that feels well worth the wait.
