Tyla Wins GRAMMY Award

Tyla has won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for her song “Water”.

This win marks the inaugural year for the category, which saw stiff competition from acclaimed artists such as Asake, Olamide (“Amapiano”), Ayra Starr (“Rush”), Burna Boy (“City Boys”), and Davido featuring Musa Keys (“Unavailable”).

The 2024 Grammy Awards also ushered in two other groundbreaking categories: Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. The latter was claimed by the legendary Kylie Minogue.

Expectations were high for Nigerian sensation Davido, who garnered nominations in three notable categories: Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Performance, and Best Global Album Performance. Despite his remarkable talent and widespread acclaim, Davido fell short of clinching any of the trophies. He lost the Best African Music category to Tyla’s “Water”, Best Global Music Performance to “Pashto” by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer & Zakir Hussain featuring Rakesh Chaurasia, and Best Global Album to Shakti’s The Moment.

Similarly, despite his nominations in categories like Best African Music Performance and Best Global Music Performance, Burna Boy did not secure a victory at this year’s ceremony. He lost the Best African Music category to Tyla’s “Water”, Best Global Music Performance to ‘Pashto’ by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer & Zakir Hussain featuring Rakesh Chaurasia, and Best Global Album to Shakti’s The Moment, and Best Melodic Rap Performance to Lil Durk’s “All My Life” featuring J Cole.
