At long last, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will meet in the ring after their long-awaited heavyweight showdown was officially confirmed for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The all-British clash, which has been discussed for more than a decade, will be streamed globally on Netflix, with the two former heavyweight champions set to headline a major card at the 78,000-capacity stadium.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh, whose The Ring will collaborate with UFC chief Dana White on the promotion of the event.

“Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together,” Alalshikh said. “This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans.”

Joshua also acknowledged the confirmation, posting “I am inspiring a generation” alongside the official fight artwork on social media.

The 36-year-old enters the bout with a 30-4 professional record, including 27 knockouts, while Fury, 37, has 36 wins, two defeats and a draw, with 25 of his victories coming by knockout. Neither fighter currently holds a world heavyweight title, but both remain highly ranked by the World Boxing Council, with Fury sitting first and Joshua second in its September 3 rankings. Agit Kabayel currently holds the WBC heavyweight title.

The December meeting will also mark the first professional fight between the pair, despite years of talk, negotiations and exchanges over a potential showdown. The fight appeared closer to becoming reality earlier this year after both men returned to action following lengthy spells away from the ring.

Fury, who returned from a 16-month layoff in April, defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov by unanimous decision before stopping veteran Mariusz Wach in the seventh round in Thailand in July. The victory over Wach was his second of 2026 and moved his record to 36-2-1.

Joshua also had a two-fight winning run coming into the announcement. After knocking out Jake Paul in December 2025, he bounced back from an unfortunate road accident in Nigeria last December to defeat Kristian Prenga in Jeddah in July. He recovered from two first-round knockdowns to stop the Albanian in the second round. The win took Joshua’s record to 30-4.

Both fighters therefore enter December having completed the bouts that were expected to clear the final hurdle towards their meeting.

The location had been one of the biggest sticking points during negotiations. Wembley Stadium and venues in the United States had previously been considered, while New York’s Madison Square Garden emerged as a potential option as organisers looked to maximise the event’s reach in the US market. Cardiff eventually won out, with the Principality Stadium’s retractable roof offering a practical advantage for a December event. The venue has also hosted major boxing events, including Joshua’s fights against Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker.

The bout is expected to take place in the early hours of Saturday morning in the UK to accommodate Netflix’s international audience, although the exact start time and full undercard have not yet been announced. Netflix has confirmed that the event will be available globally to subscribers at no additional cost.

Joshua and Fury are scheduled to face the media together at a press conference in London on September 30 as the formal build-up to their first meeting begins.
