Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, ended their campaign at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought third-place finish, beating hosts Egypt in a penalty shootout at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday, April 18.

Coming off a disappointing 1–0 semifinal loss to South Africa, the Flying Eagles went into the third-place match against the Young Pharaohs without two of their key starters: goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt and defender Odinaka Okoro, both of whom play for Sporting Lagos. Harcourt was sidelined after suffering a concussion against the Amajita, while Okoro missed the tie due to suspension following accumulated bookings.

The Flying Eagles got off to a shaky start, conceding just three minutes in after Omar Osama Hassan converted a pass from Labib Mahmoud. Despite the early setback, the seven-time African champion dominated the rest of the half, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and creating two clear-cut chances. However, the Young Pharaohs held onto their narrow lead going into the break.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s halftime changes proved decisive. Just two minutes into the second half, substitute Bidemi Amole equalised off an assist from fellow substitute Oliseh Divine, levelling the match and setting the tone for a tense remainder of the encounter, which ultimately ended 1–1 in regulation time.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, the Flying Eagles were flawless from the spot, just like they were in their shootout triumph over defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinal. Emmanuel Chukwu, Isaac Ayuma, Kparobo Nathaniel Arierhi, and Tahir Maigana all converted their kicks. Substitute goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar was the hero, making two saves to seal a 4–1 shootout victory.

The win gives Nigeria four wins in five head-to-head meetings against Egypt at this level and secures their fifth bronze medal at the U20 AFCON.
