Nigeria’s Flying Eagles wrapped up their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey with a third-place finish and a ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup set for September in Chile.

The team recorded a 1-0 win over Tunisia and drew against Morocco and Kenya in the group stage. These results pitted them against defending champions Senegal in the quarter-final. After a goalless encounter, Nigeria triumphed via a penalty shootout to seal a semi-final berth and one of Africa’s four World Cup slots. 

With seven U-20 AFCON titles, the most by any side, the Flying Eagles were expected to get past a South African team chasing its first-ever trophy in the semi-final. However, the Aliyu Zubairu-led side fell 1–0 to the Amajitas at the Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday, May 15.

They bounced back in the third-place playoff, defeating hosts Egypt on penalties to claim the bronze medal and end their tournament on a winning note.

Beyond the results, Nigeria’s campaign in Egypt revealed key areas for improvement ahead of the World Cup in Chile, while also revealing some standout players despite the team’s overall tepid campaign.

Here are five standout players from Nigeria’s 2025 U-20 AFCON outing.

Ebenezer Harcourt

Thanks to Ebenezer Harcourt’s commanding presence between the sticks, Nigeria boasted one of the best defensive records in the tournament, despite finishing third. The Sporting Lagos Football Academy goalkeeper started five of Nigeria’s six matches, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just two goals in regulation time.

His biggest moment came in the quarter-final against Senegal, where he saved two penalties in the shootout to send the team into the semi-finals and book Nigeria’s ticket to Chile.

Notably, South Africa only took the lead over Nigeria in the semi-final after a concussion forced Harcourt out early in the second half. At just 15 years old, Harcourt was the youngest player at the tournament and arguably one of its biggest revelations.

Daniel Bameyi

Captain Daniel Bameyi was a rock at the back for the seven-time champions. The 19-year-old centre-back was ever-present, putting in composed performances and leading the team with authority.

He earned Man of the Match honours against Morocco and scored the crucial equaliser in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Kenya in their last group game. Bameyi’s consistent form earned him a place in the tournament’s group stage Best XI.

Already capped at both senior and U-23 levels, Bameyi has featured for the Super Eagles in a 2022 friendly against Costa Rica and was part of the squad for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau.

Odinaka Okoro

A graduate of the Sporting Lagos Academy, Odinaka Okoro was a delight to watch for Nigerians at the U-20 AFCON. The 18-year-old left-back impressed with his balance of defensive solidity and attacking sharpness, often turning Nigeria’s backline into a springboard for forward play.

Okoro assisted Ibrahim Auwal for Nigeria’s first goal of the tournament and was rewarded for his subsequent solid group-stage performances with a place in the competition’s Best XI for the opening round.

Kparobo Arierhi

Striker Kparobo Arierhi had long been flagged as one to watch. In the WAFU B qualifiers, he scored a brace in the final against Ghana, where he was voted the Man of the Match. Ahead of the U-20 AFCON, CAF listed him among the top five young talents to watch.

While he wasn’t at his usual form in Egypt, Arierhi remained Nigeria’s most potent attacking threat. The 18-year-old’s movement, hold-up play, and determination ensured he stood out in an otherwise blunt attack.
