Nigerian excellence echoed across Europe this past weekend, thanks to three players: Chiamaka Nnadozie, Bruno Onyemaechi and Raphael Onyedika, all of whom clinched trophies with their respective clubs.

It all began with Super Falcons’ Chiamaka Nnadozie, whose penalty heroics ended Paris FC’s trophy drought in the Coupe de France Féminine on Saturday, April 3, 2025. Her side defeated Paris Saint-Germain in a tense final at the Stade de l’Épopée in Calais.

The all-Paris final reflected a rivalry that’s just as close in the league standings, where PSG leads by a narrow four-point margin. As defending champions of the Coupe de France, PSG were slight favourites to complete a double over their city rivals, who had not lifted silverware since winning the Division 1 Féminine in 2006.  However, after a goalless regulation time, Nnadozie’s brilliance in the shootout proved decisive.

The 2024 CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year pulled off two crucial saves during the penalties to help Paris FC secure their first title in nearly two decades and her first since leaving Nigeria’s Rivers Angels in 2020.

Europe has been a transformative chapter in Nnadozie’s career. The 24-year-old, who began her journey with Rivers Angels in 2016 and won four domestic titles during her four-year spell, has blossomed into one of the continent’s top goalkeepers. She was one of Nigeria’s outstanding athletes in 2024, notably saving five penalties across eight UEFA Women’s Champions League matches in the 2023–24 season. Her unwavering form saw her clinch the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award for a second consecutive year.

In the same winning vein, Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika helped Club Brugge lift the Belgian Cup (Croky Cup) on Sunday after a 2–1 victory over rivals Anderlecht at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

Onyedika’s passing range and tireless energy were key to Brugge’s dominance in midfield. His contribution helped set the tone for Romeo Vermant’s brace, which ultimately sealed the win. The triumph marked Brugge’s 12th Croky Cup title and Onyedika’s first. The 24-year-old joined Brugge on a five-year contract from  Midtjylland in 2022 and won the Belgian Pro League with the club in the 2023/24 season.

While Nnadozie and Onyedika added to their growing trophy collections, Bruno Onyemaechi finally broke his silverware drought with Olympiacos FC. The Owerri-born defender had enjoyed stints abroad with Brazilian side Feirense and Portuguese outfits Vila Real and Boavista, but titles had eluded him until now.

That changed at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on Sunday, where Olympiacos were officially crowned champions of Greece for the 46th time. Though the title had been mathematically secured earlier, Sunday’s match served as the crowning moment for the Piraeus giants and their Nigerian defender who only joined the club in January 2025.
