The Super Eagles camp in Uyo has been buzzing with excitement and anticipation as Nigeria prepares for its final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe this Sunday. Newly invited defender Jordan Torunarigha, has made headlines by admitting the immense challenge of trying to contain Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s prolific striker.

Torunarigha, a 26-year-old defender, earned his first call-up to the Nigerian national team, alongside his Belgian club Gent teammate, Gift Orban, under the leadership of head coach Jose Peseiro. The defender, who began his career with Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, made his professional debut in April 2017 and later joined KRC Genk permanently in July 2022.

However, it’s his candid remarks about his defensive struggles against Victor Osimhen that have captured the attention of football fans worldwide. Despite facing the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland in the past, Torunarigha confessed that Osimhen presented an entirely different challenge.

“Osimhen is the best striker in the world right now. One of the best strikers in the world. And to be honest, I’ve never had something like this. I don’t know how to defend him. It’s weird,” Torunarigha to BOUNCE SPORTS.

The defender continued to share his thoughts on Osimhen’s unique qualities, stating, “So I played against Lewandowski and Haaland, and I figured out how to defend them. But for him, I don’t know. He’s strong, but he can keep the ball. It’s difficult, but I will find out.”

Victor Osimhen’s recognition has extended far beyond the Super Eagles camp. He was recently nominated as one of the 30 players for the 2023 men’s Ballon d’Or by France Football Magazine, further solidifying his status as one of the world’s top talents.

Osimhen’s performances have also attracted the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea. Reports suggest that these clubs expressed interest in the striker during the summer transfer window.

The former Lille striker has continued to impress in the new season, netting three goals in four games. Additionally, there are reports indicating that Osimhen is on the brink of signing a new contract that would extend his stay with Napoli beyond his current deal.

In the context of the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers, Victor Osimhen has emerged as the leading goalscorer, with an impressive seven goals to his name. Four of those goals came in the first leg against Sunday’s opponent, Sao Tome and Principe.

The Super Eagles have already qualified for the 2023 AFCON and are undoubtedly thrilled to have a talent like Victor Osimhen leading their attack. His unique blend of strength, ball control, and scoring prowess has earned him recognition not only from his peers but also from the footballing world at large.
