Barely three months after it increased subscription packages for its PayTVs, DStv and GOtv, in Nigeria, Multichoice has announced a 50% reduction in the price of its DStv package.

Between April 2023 and May 2024, Multichoice Nigeria increased its DStv and GOtv subscription prices three times due to a number of reasons, chiefly driven by the economic realities of the region.

However, the group is now introducing a reduction that sees the subscription package drop from N20,000 to N10,000. It has also announced that customers will get a free upgrade to the next DStv package tier when they pay their current subscription in full from June 16 to July 31, 2025.

These moves are geared towards keeping and improving their active customer base in a market filled with numerous options. According to the South African-based company, the initiative is also a response to the current economic impact on Nigerians, with a significant decrease in their purchasing power.

“By repositioning itself as a platform for daily value, DStv aims to encourage content discovery across a wider array of genres, including movies, drama, kids’ programming, and news,” the South African-based company stated.

Moreover, Multichoice reported a decline of 1.2 million in active subscribers, falling to 14.5 million, after its financial results for the year ended March 31, 2025.

In response, CEO Calvo Mawela told Reuters that the company is considering all options as part of a broader product offering going forward. A major option that was discussed was a new subscription package that will contain only the sports channels so as to better serve their customer base who subscribe to the premium package only for sports and often resolve to cancellations during off seasons.
