Trump Signs Agreement to Decide TikTok’s Fate in the US

President Donald Trump signed an executive order that set in motion the divestment plan of TikTok.

After four presidential delays of the enforcement of the TikTok ban in America, the White House and the Chinese-based social network have finally found a compromise that will keep its operations running with no interruption in the country.

On Thursday, September 25, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that set in motion the divestment plan of ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, which will ultimately satisfy the federal law requiring the China-based firm to sell its US assets to an American firm in order to avoid a ban.

Much of the technicalities about the agreement have not been disclosed, which is perhaps the biggest indicator that it is likely to take more time for both sides to finally get the divestment over with. However, the signing at the White House on Thursday takes TikTok away from the limbo state it has been in since January 19, when President Joe Biden’s bipartisan bill requiring ByteDance to sell the platform to an American company or face a ban over national security concerns was enacted. Its operations, which had been sustained by Trump’s repeated executive orders to delay the ban, would now heave a sigh of relief after the Chinese firm eventually gave in to some sort of compromise.

“There was some resistance on the Chinese side, but the fundamental thing that we wanted to accomplish is that we wanted to keep TikTok operating, but we also wanted to make sure that we protected Americans’ data privacy as required by law,” Vice President JD Vance said during the signing of the executive order at the Oval Office.

Under the new plan, ByteDance will own less than 20% of TikTok, while some (most likely American) investors will retain 80% ownership. The plan would achieve the qualified divestiture required for TikTok to comply with federal law, according to the order.

“This is going to be American-operated all the way,” Trump said during the signing on Thursday. “I have great respect for President Xi, and I very much appreciate that he approved the deal, because to get it done properly, we really needed the support of China and the approval of China.”

Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, tech entrepreneur Michael Dell, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch are the investors mentioned in the agreement so far.
