In one of Africa’s most ambitious film collaborations in recent years, British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba‘s production company, 22Summers, has joined forces with Moses Babatope’s Nile Media Entertainment Group and UK-based action specialist Action Xtreme to develop a slate of West African action films. This long-term production venture is dedicated to developing commercially driven action films rooted in African stories and talent, while establishing a sustainable production ecosystem that will strengthen action filmmaking across the continent.

The partnership will produce an initial slate of action features beginning in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a second title expected in early 2027. Elba, alongside his longtime production partner Gina Carter, will executive produce the slate through 22Summers, with Elba also attached to direct one of the films. Action Xtreme founder Chee Keong Cheung will direct the first project, while Babatope will produce through Nile Motion Pictures, with Nile Entertainment overseeing African theatrical distribution.

But the announcement represents something far greater than another international co-production. According to Deadline, the partnership is designed as a long-term production ecosystem to nurture local creatives and build globally competitive genre filmmaking from the continent. Rather than producing isolated projects, the ambition is to establish a sustainable pipeline of African action films that can travel across both theatrical and streaming markets globally.

The collaboration builds on the relationship between Nile Media and Action Xtreme, whose 2025 first-look agreement resulted in Son of the Soil, the Lagos-set action thriller directed by Cheung. Reflecting on that experience, the filmmaker noted that working in Nigeria exposed him to the depth of talent and untold stories across the continent, convincing him that Africa possesses the creative resources needed to compete on the global action stage.

For Moses Babatope, whose Nile Media has evolved from one of Nigeria’s leading distribution companies into a growing production force, the venture is another significant milestone in expanding Nollywood’s global ambitions. Rather than simply exporting African stories, the company is now positioning itself to help build internationally competitive film franchises from within the continent.

British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba

Although this is Elba’s most significant production partnership with a Nigerian company to date, it is far from his first engagement with African storytelling.

In recent years, the actor whose father is Sierra Leonean and mother is Ghanaian has consistently expressed a desire to invest in Africa’s stories beyond appearing on screen. In 2025, Elba deepened his creative ties to the continent with Dust to Dreams, a short film born of an Africa-centred partnership with Mo Abudu of EbonyLife Films. He recently filmed This Is How It Goes, a Ghana-set Apple feature film starring Charlie Cox and Wunmi Mosaku.

His latest collaboration also arrives as anticipation continues to build around Children of Blood and Bone, the film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film boasts one of the strongest African and Black casts assembled in recent years, featuring Idris Elba alongside Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cynthia Erivo, Regina King, Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Tosin Cole, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Nigerian music star Ayra Starr.

Elba’s continued engagement reflects growing international confidence not only in African stories, but also in African producers, production companies and technical talent capable of delivering films for global audiences.

Action remains one of the world’s most commercially successful film categories. Franchises such as John Wick, Mission: Impossible and Fast & Furious have demonstrated that action films can transcend language and cultural barriers through visual storytelling, making them among the easiest genres to export internationally.

While Nigerian filmmakers have experimented with action over the years, as in Brotherhood and the Netflix hit The Black Book, this partnership offers the continent a substantial opportunity to enter the global market.

By combining Action Xtreme’s expertise in action filmmaking with Nile Media’s understanding of African audiences and distribution, and Elba’s international profile and creative leadership, the venture offers a blueprint for building an action-filmmaking ecosystem rather than producing one-off successes.
