A Tribe Called Judah by Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele has become the first Nollywood movie to hit a billion naira at the box office. It has the biggest weekend opening in Nollywood, the largest opening for a female director ever and the highest grossing Nollywood film ever.

From the get-go, it made its mark. It claimed the title of highest-grossing Nollywood debut ever, with over N113 million on opening weekend. Within days, it raked in N400 million, setting a new Nollywood record.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), the official body responsible for collating box office numbers, A Tribe Called Judah earned a total gross of ₦854.3 million in 2023, the highest-grossing Nollywood movie for 2023 and the highest of all the time. In just 3 weeks, it surpassed blockbusters like Sugar Rush and King of Boys in ticket sales.

 

Driven by its story, talent, and audience demand, the film’s number is likely to continue growing. It is available now in UK cinemas.
