Spotify recently introduced a dedicated website called “Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams” to comprehensively cover all data related to Afrobeats. This interactive platform tracks everything related to Afrobeats and offers key timelines of the genre’s evolution over the years, along with intriguing Spotify data.
In accordance with the website’s purpose, Spotify released a list unveiling the top 10 most streamed Afrobeats artists in the platform’s history. Leading the pack as the most streamed Afrobeats artist of all time on Spotify is the acclaimed Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and performer, Burna Boy. This achievement is hardly surprising, given his impressive track record of hit songs such as “Last Last,” “On The Low,” “For My Hand,” etc. The complete roster features other prominent stars like Wizkid, Rema, CKay, Tems, and many others.
Afrobeats stands as one of Africa’s most significant exports. According to Spotify, the genre has experienced an astounding 550 percent growth since 2017. In 2022 alone, Afrobeats garnered over 13 billion streams, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in the global music landscape.
Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa said, ”There is no doubt that Afrobeats as a genre is here to stay, and will only continue to shatter more ceilings. In 2023 alone, the genre has been played for more than 223 million hours with streams exceeding 7.1 billion on Spotify. We created this site for both new and longtime fans of the genre, who would like to have a better understanding of how and where this explosive sound came to be.”
For the next eight weeks, the site will undergo biweekly updates, ensuring fresh content and the latest happenings within the Afrobeats realm. However, its significance extends beyond this timeframe as it will serve as an ever-present resource, continuously updated with new and exciting updates concerning Afrobeats.
