The 14th African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) celebrated “Japan Day” at the Filmhouse Twin Waters, Victoria Island, in an event that blended art, culture, and diplomacy through the lens of cinema.

Hosted under the AFRIFF Film & Content Market (AFCM) from Thursday, November 6, to Friday, November 7, 2025, the event brought together leading figures from both countries, including Jean Fall, Head of Production at AFCM; Themba Sibeko, AFCM’s Market Head; Masakazu Takahashi, General Manager of the Japan Foundation; and Hideo Suzuki, the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria.

Although the programme centred on film screenings, its significance extended far beyond the screen. The featured films — the classic Akira and Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One — represent the global influence of Japanese cinema and its enduring creative power.

Speaking at the event, AFCM Market Head, Sibeko, highlighted the broader intent of “Japan Day” as a bridge between nations. “This event showcases the rich diversity of Japanese cinema, providing a platform for cultural exchange and fostering greater understanding between the two nations,” he said.

Organisers described the event as part of AFRIFF’s commitment to promoting international collaboration through film. Beyond cultural appreciation, the screenings underscored the growing ties between Nigeria and Japan — a relationship increasingly defined by shared creative and economic aspirations.

By spotlighting Japanese cinema, AFRIFF aims to inspire Nigerian filmmakers and open new avenues for cooperation in content production, trade, and investment. The initiative, supported by the AFCM, seeks to position film as both an artistic and economic catalyst.

After a weeklong of activities, including panel sessions featuring acclaimed actors and filmmakers such as David Oyelowo, Deyemi Okanlawon, and Kunle Afolayan and Afrobeats stars such Davido and Dr. Sid, AFRIFF 2025 will conclude on Saturday, November 8.
