The Pick: Cassper Nyovest Holds His Ground on “Kusho Bani”

Cassper Nyovest, the self-proclaimed “Mufasa” of South African hip-hop, is one of the few who’ve battled the tides, weathered the storms, and not just remained relevant, but continued to pull his weight for over a decade. That kind of staying power is rare, validation of his adaptability and hustle.  He’s seen trends come and go, genres rise and fall, and he’s consistently found a way to reinvent himself, to stay in the conversation.  But in 2025, the game has changed. The lines have blurred, genres have fused, and the sounds of Amapiano and Afro-house have become the lingua franca of the youth. Cassper, ever the chameleon, the pragmatist, has always clearly taken note.  He’s never been afraid to explore what’s hot and more importantly what’s not.

In a musical scene that’s constantly evolving, resting on your laurels is a dangerous game. “Kusho Bani” (“Who says what”) is a track feels less like a pursuit of the current zeitgeist and more like a return to foundational principles. Cassper’s reminding everyone — the doubters, the naysayers, the ones who’ve questioned his reign — that he’s still here, still on top. It’s an exercise in hip-hop bravado, a chest-thumping declaration of his continued relevance. It’s a reminder of what Cassper has achieved, not a glimpse into what he could achieve. Maybe that’s okay. Maybe this is just Cassper reaffirming his position, reminding everyone who’s boss.  “Kusho Bani” isn’t a reinvention of the wheel, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s a solid, well-crafted hip-hop track from one of South Africa’s most enduring talents.
