The docuseries BECKHAM follows David Beckham's meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom.

A fascinating four-part documentary series “Beckham” which explores the life of one of football’s most iconic characters, David Beckham, was recently released on Netflix. Launched on October 4, the show follows Beckham’s incredible journey from a working-class beginnings in south London to becoming half of the famed power couple, Victoria Beckham and him, and a worldwide football sensation. Along with guiding viewers through the highs and lows of Beckham’s professional life, the documentary provides a unique look into the dynamics of the Beckham family through interviews with close family members, teammates, close friends, and even the paparazzi that followed them about.

Beyond the football highlights, “Beckham” is a fun look back at fashion from the turn of the millennium. The series traces the couple’s stylistic development from matching leather catsuits to flashy purple wedding gowns. Famous his-and-hers fashion attempts, such as Victoria’s tiny shorts from the WAG era and double denim ensembles, take fans back to the couple’s glitzy past.

Class and Love Story in Clothes

In addition to showcasing the Beckhams’ wardrobe choices, the documentary considers the social dynamics of the time. Their bold rejection of social class, especially when they first got engaged in 1998, demonstrates how popular their fashion projects are around the world. The series delves into how the couple’s appearance and hairstyles came to represent their professions; David’s decision to leave Manchester United is largely attributed to his shaven head.

“Beckham” deftly reveals a love tale with wardrobe selections. The documentary highlights the couple’s early propensity to twin and suggests Victoria’s influence in forming David’s public persona. Considered revolutionary in 1998, the sarong represents their aspirations beyond pop culture and football, with hints of a love narrative entwined with their design statements.

Behind the Scenes:

While the series predominantly focuses on David, glimpses of Victoria’s influence and career are notably absent. However, the documentary sheds light on David’s meticulous closet, revealing his O.C.D. tendencies. From compulsive neatness in the kitchen to adjusting a clothes hanger by a millimeter, the most human side of David emerges.

Legacy and Transition:

“Beckham” acknowledges David’s impact on football and brand partnerships, opening up possibilities for future players like Messi and Neymar. The series captures his attention to detail, especially in managing the Miami club, and hints at his transition to football club ownership.
