Spotify Updates Discover Weekly to Let Users Guide Genre Picks

This update follows a wave of complaints about Discover Weekly recycling the same songs and inaccurately classifying genres.

Audio streaming giant Spotify is rolling out an update to Discover Weekly, its recommendation playlist that’s readily available for streaming every Monday.

Discover Weekly, a 10-year-old feature on Spotify, will now provide Premium users with new controls at the top of the playlist. These controls will allow users to push their recommendations toward specific genres that the algorithmic curation might otherwise overlook.

This update follows a wave of complaints about Discover Weekly recycling the same songs and inaccurately classifying genres, a flaw that undermines its role as a tool for music discovery.

In response, Spotify told Business Insider that it had improved genre accuracy and updated the Discover Weekly recommendation algorithm. The recent update now gives users more control over the types of new music their playlist brings in.

To access the improved features, Spotify Premium users can scroll to the “Made for You” hub, which is usually a few sections away from the top of the home page. From there, they can navigate to their Discover Weekly playlist, where the new genre controls will be visible.

This update is part of a broader push by Spotify to expand personalisation tools for users. Earlier in May, it introduced several features designed to give listeners more influence over their listening algorithms. New options for Premium subscribers include queue management, playlist customisation, and playback settings such as Shuffle, Smart Shuffle, Repeat, and Sleep Timer. Most of these features can be fully toggled from Spotify’s settings.
