Asake is the latest Afrobeats superstar to take the NPR Tiny Desk platform. Mr Money has never been a slouch as a live performer, hence backed by a tight band, on stage at Tiny Desk, he proved the engine is still fully tuned: his vocals held up live, the groove flowed, and his charisma translated. He opened with “WHY LOVE,” the single he dropped under his newly-formed label, Giran Republic, in early 2025, then moved further into a setlist that was stacked with essentials from MMWTV, Work of Art and Lungu Boy. The sequence included the Grammy-nominated “Amapiano” to mega-hits “Remember,” “Lonely at the Top,” “MMS,” “Ototo,” “Organise” and closed with the thumping “Fuji Vibe.”
Offstage, the changes have been just as telling. Asake ensures his public image is never static and always drives conversation. This year saw him focus on aesthetic overhauls that aim to validate his becoming a post-modern icon. The “Why Love” music video also doubled as a showcase for pieces from his upcoming unisex clothing line, GIRAN, confirming his ambitions as a full-spectrum musician and lifestyle tastemaker.
Musically, he’s been on an improbable run of collaborations that mirror his expanding world view. He delivered the transatlantic hit “Gold” with J Hus and penetrated the American Trap scene via Gunna’s track “satisfaction.” He continued his push into the Francophone market with the single “Badman Gangsta,” featuring French-Congolese star Tiakola.
The Tiny Desk concert is simply the latest, clearest communiqué from an artist who recognizes that to truly stay on top, you must relentlessly redraw the map.
