‘Breath of Life’ Tops AMVCAs

The 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards took place on May 11, 2024, at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos State. The annual award show, presented by MultiChoice, recognizes outstanding achievements in television and film.

This year’s edition had 27 categories, 16 non-voting and nine audience voting categories. The winners were selected by a jury led by filmmaker and head judge Femi Odugbemi.

Though coming into the ceremony with fewer nominations than some competitors – Over the Bridge held a leading 12 – Breath of Life managed to snag the most wins in some of the major categories. This included the coveted awards for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Lead Actor.

Further, Chimezie Imo, who played lead alongside Wale Ojo in Breath of Life won the Trailblazer Award. Idowu Philips, aka Iya Rainbow, and  Richard Mofe Damijo received this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Other winners included Over the Bridge and Jagun Jagun which both won two awards. The critically-acclaimed black-and-white fantasy thriller by CJ Obasi, Mami Wata won only one award for Best Makeup.

Some high-profile films, however, went home empty-handed. Funke Akindele’s record-breaking A Tribe Called Judah and Kayode  Kasum’s Afamefuna, despite nominations, couldn’t convert them into wins.
