Bnxn and Rema Unite for Thumping “Fi Kan We Kan”

Bnxn (fka Buju) is playing the long game in 2024. While his output has been selective, each release lands with precision, reinforcing his staying power. He recently linked up with Rema —Afrobeats’ firebrand and juggernaut in the feature scene — for “Fi Kan We Kan,” a smooth, urgent banger designed for movement. The duo tap into Afrobeats’ enduring obsession with amapiano, textured percussion over bouncy log drums courtesy of Blaise Beatz. On the track, the instrumental remains loose and spacious, allowing both artists to carve out their respective lanes.

Bnxn slides in, holding the song’s melodic line in his pocket with characteristic ease. He stays and luxuriates within his groove, letting his presence speak for itself. He opens the door for Rema to charge in. Far removed from his honeyed “Dumebi” days and boyish charm, Rema has grown into a bolder, more unpredictable figure. His recent work — exemplified by his chaotic delivery on his latest album,
HEIS — discharges a more restless vigour. On “Fi Kan We Kan,” this new persona is in full swing. “Pay me my money, make I ball small / Stop all the long talk…,” he orders, voice brimming with impatience and edge. His verse is cheeky and hot with lines that are both witty and confrontational: “You get fake dreads, but you wan give me advice about patience / Are you making sense?” His presence on the track cuts through Bnxn’s smoothness with just the right amount of friction.

The track navigates the familiar terrain of ego, money, and loyalty, yet the delivery elevates the themes beyond the cliché. Bnxn’s verse leans into skepticism: “If you don’t say that you’re for me / It’s no guarantee.” Meanwhile, Rema’s verse carries the hunger of someone who has been burned and won’t be fooled twice. “Fi Kan We Kan” shows Bnxn and Rema, though stylistically different, operating at the peak of their powers. Both artists lean into their differences without ever stepping on each other’s toes.
