The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, paid tribute to Black fashion with the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition focused on the historical and cultural influence of Black dandyism. With the dress code titled Tailored for You, guests were invited to express individuality through tailored fashion. This year also marked the first time since 2003 that the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition spotlighted menswear.

The event was co-chaired by A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and Vogue’s Global Editorial Director Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. Nigerians showed up with superstars Tems, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr making appearances. Here is how they pulled up:

Tems in Ozwald Boateng

Tems arrived in a sculpted gown by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng. The ensemble featured blue and green panels, a fitted mermaid silhouette, and a pinstriped shirt beneath, styled with a green pussy bow and a coordinating umbrella adorned with a peacock feather motif.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in Prabal Gurung

Chimamanda wore a bold red gown by Prabal Gurung, featuring feathers, a dramatic train, and menswear-inspired details like a cinched waist and statement bows. She accessorized with diamonds that accentuated the striking silhouette. The Dream Count author is also a member of the Met Gala host committee, alongside Usher, Ayo Edebiri, Sha‘Carri Richardson, Doechii, Tyla, and others.

Cynthia Erivo in Givenchy

Cynthia Erivo appeared in a custom Givenchy look that included a silver gem-encrusted corset bodice and an open-front tulle skirt, paired with red gem-detailed platform heels. 

Ayo Edebiri in Ferragamo

Actress Ayo Edebiri paid tribute to her family roots with a custom Ferragamo gown designed by Maximilian Davis. The floor-length piece featured maroon beading and was paired with a black leather trench coat and sheer gloves, referencing classic tuxedo tailoring.

Kwame Onwuachi

American-Nigerian chef Kwame Onwuachi, who oversaw the event’s dinner, appeared in a sleek black pinstripe suit, topped with a gold-jeweled crown that offered a regal spin on the tailored theme.

Ayra Starr in Ozwald Boateng

Ayra Starr made her Met Gala debut wearing a custom black gown by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng. The sleek dress featured a plunging neckline and a daring exposed back. She completed the look with a black cane and wore her signature pixie cut, keeping accessories minimal.

Burna Boy in Ozwald Boateng

Burna Boy also chose a look by Boateng. His outfit featured a sharply tailored overcoat in deep shades of plum and black, worn over coordinating high-waisted trousers and a fitted waistcoat. The ensemble included subtle brocade detailing and a floor-length scarf draped around his shoulders.

Ego Nwodim in Christopher John Rogers

Ego Nwodim wore a black three-piece suit by Christopher John Rogers. The look included a cropped jacket with broad shoulders, a structured corset top with a ruffled peplum hem, and slim ankle-length trousers. Colourful buttons detailing lined the sleeves, matched by rainbow nail art. Bright red patent leather pumps and a diamond necklace added a nice contrast.

Damson Idris in Tommy Hilfiger

Damson Idris made a dramatic entrance in a white racing suit before it was torn away by aides to reveal a burgundy velvet ensemble designed by Tommy Hilfiger. The tailored look featured a double-breasted blazer, wide-leg trousers, and a sheer shirt underneath. He completed the look with a glittering racing helmet encrusted with crystals.

Nnamdi Asomugha 

Actor and producer Nnamdi Asomugha wore a clean-cut black suit with contrasting white lapels and a white dress shirt.
