Clipse has officially dropped the music video for their track “Chains & Whips,” directed by Gabriel Moses. Pulled from their highly anticipated album Let God Sort ‘Em Out, the clip for the Kendrick Lamar-featuring track is a series of unsettling, artfully composed tableaux.
These scenes, reminiscent of classical paintings, unspool a complex lineage of Black experience from the literal shackles of slavery to the more insidious systems of modern life. While Clipse members Pusha T and No Malice appear, Kendrick Lamar is absent from the visuals, with a powerful sequence featuring a pageant queen lip-syncing his acclaimed verse, tears streaming down her face. This evocative imagery amplifies the song’s weighty themes, creating a visually arresting complement to the raw lyricism and Pharrell’s haunting production.
A post-script sees two women on a porch offering a cappella version of Clipse’s breakthrough hit, “Grindin’.”
